Name: Quercus rubra - Carya ovata / Dennstaedtia punctilobula - Eupatorium purpureum - (Stachys nuttallii) Forest
Reference: Fleming, G. P., and P. P. Coulli...
Description: This community type is known definitively only from the high-elevation granitic terrain of the northern Blue Ridge of Virginia. Occurrences of this fern-rich oak-hickory forest are chiefly limited to gently sloping ridge crests and convex upper slopes at the highest elevations of the northern Blue Ridge. Elevation ranges from 1128-1223 m (3700-4010 feet). Soils are moderately infertile and very strongly acidic, but typically are dark, moist, loamy, and evidently deep to bedrock. Quercus rubra and Carya ovata are constant components and usually share dominance in the overstory; the latter, however, generally attains greater importance in subcanopy strata. Betula alleghaniensis, Betula lenta, Prunus serotina, and Fraxinus americana are occasionally present in the canopy. Carya ovalis is essentially absent from this type. Tree stature is uniformly low, and canopy cover is typically <60%. Shrubs are generally sparse and outnumbered by saplings of canopy species, including Quercus rubra, Carya ovata, Betula alleghaniensis, and Prunus serotina. Sprouts of Castanea dentata are common. Dennstaedtia punctilobula often dominates the herb layer.
