Name: Corylus americana - (Spiraea tomentosa, Malus ioensis) Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Midwestern Ecology Working Group...
Description: This alliance is found in the glaciated midwestern United States. Shrubs 0.5-2 m tall, particularly Corylus americana, Cornus spp., Malus ioensis, and Spiraea tomentosa, are abundant. Scrubby Quercus velutina are also common. Herbaceous species are less well known but probably include typical tallgrass prairie species, such as Andropogon gerardii, Schizachyrium scoparium, and Sorghastrum nutans. These barrens shrublands occurred on flat to gently rolling sites near prairie vegetation. Soils were typically fine-textured. Fires maintained the shrubby character of the alliance, and in its absence trees will dominate the vegetation.
