Description: This shrubland alliance of cismontane California grows between 300 and 1850 m of elevation on all slopes. Substrates are usually derived from bedrock or alluvium and may be rocky. The climate is Mediterranean with cool, moist winters and warm, dry summers. Most precipitation falls as rain between November and May. Yearly rainfall totals vary between 40 and 200 cm in the range of this alliance. This chaparral community is dominated by at least 60% cover of Quercus wislizeni. Other shrubs present may include Arctostaphylos glauca, Arctostaphylos glandulosa, Cercocarpus montanus var. glaber, Aesculus californica, Frangula californica (= Rhamnus californica), Juniperus californica, Quercus chrysolepis, Adenostoma fasciculatum, Ceanothus leucodermis, Prunus ilicifolia ssp. ilicifolia, Rhamnus ilicifolia, Toxicodendron diversilobum, Quercus dumosa, and Ceanothus cuneatus. Emergent individual trees could include Pinus coulteri, Pinus sabiniana, and Pinus attenuata.
