Name: Picea engelmannii / Carex disperma Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This minor coniferous forest association occurs in the mountains of central and eastern Idaho, western Wyoming and northeastern Oregon. Elevations range from 1900-2400 m in the Rocky Mountains and 1500-1650 m in Oregon. Stands occur as small (<0.5 ha) patches or strips along stream terraces near the lower elevational limits of Abies lasiocarpa. Soils are generally acidic, have a deep organic layer and are saturated most of the year. The tree canopy is usually dominated by Picea engelmannii. Picea pungens or, in early seral stands, Pinus contorta and Populus tremuloides may be present to codominant. Occasional Abies lasiocarpa trees may be present in drier microhabitats or as seedlings, but they do not thrive or persist. The shrubs Ribes lacustre, Linnaea borealis, Ribes montigenum, Rubus parviflorus, or Alnus incana are often found scattered in the understory. A mat of Carex disperma typically dominates the herbaceous layer. Diverse wet-site species are present including Equisetum arvense, Glyceria striata (= Glyceria elata), Calamagrostis canadensis, Actaea rubra, Arnica cordifolia, Chamerion angustifolium (= Epilobium angustifolium), Galium triflorum, Maianthemum stellatum, Pyrola spp., Senecio triangularis, and Thalictrum occidentale. Diagnostic of this association is the closed coniferous tree canopy dominated by Picea engelmannii with a Carex disperma-dominated herbaceous layer. Abies lasiocarpa cover is not significant, and sites are seasonally flooded with surface water present for extended periods during the growing season.
