Name: Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa - Alnus rubra / Rubus spectabilis Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association occurs on well-developed floodplains of lowland rivers in western Oregon, western Washington, and coastal British Columbia. It is flooded periodically, but typically not every year, by overbank floods, upon which its long-term persistence in the landscape is probably dependent. Soils are alluvium that are well-drained. The relatively closed deciduous tree canopy is dominated in the uppermost layer by Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa up to about 50 m tall. A subcanopy layer of Alnus rubra is present and variable in percent cover. Scattered conifers are sometimes present, especially in lower layers (e.g., Abies grandis, Thuja plicata). The understory is dominated by the deciduous shrub Rubus spectabilis, which can be quite dense. Several other shrubs may be present in lesser amounts. The herb layer is variable in quantity and composition. Some typical species include Tolmiea menziesii, Stachys chamissonis var. cooleyae, Athyrium filix-femina, Circaea alpina, Claytonia sibirica, Urtica dioica, and Polystichum munitum. The dominance of Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa and Rubus spectabilis, combined with a greater abundance of Alnus rubra than Acer macrophyllum, is probably diagnostic.
