Description: This forest occurs on slight upland rises in a very flat, wet landscape, in the Outer Coastal Plain of southeastern South Carolina and possibly eastern Georgia. The canopy is characterized by the presence of Quercus alba, Quercus nigra, and Quercus falcata. Other canopy trees include Quercus pagoda, Pinus taeda, Pinus glabra, Carya glabra, Carya alba, Fagus grandifolia, and Liquidambar styraciflua. The subcanopy may include Fagus grandifolia, Carpinus caroliniana ssp. caroliniana, Cornus florida, Persea palustris, Magnolia grandiflora, and (rarely) Ostrya virginiana. The shrub stratum includes Symplocos tinctoria, Ilex vomitoria, Vaccinium tenellum, and Leucothoe axillaris. The herb stratum is sparse and includes Chasmanthium laxum, Chasmanthium sessiliflorum, Hexastylis arifolia var. arifolia, Mitchella repens, Smilax pumila, and Pteridium aquilinum var. pseudocaudatum.
