Name: Salvia apiana Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This alliance of southern California grows on rarely flooded, low-gradient deposits along streams, from sea level to 1600 m elevation. Soils are shallow and very well-drained. Summers are hot and dry. Winters are mild and moist. Yearly precipitation totals average about 50 cm, and most precipitation occurs between November and May. This alliance is characterized by the importance of Salvia apiana in the shrub canopy. Artemisia californica is also usually present, though in smaller amounts. Other shrubs present may include Diplacus aurantiacus, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Malacothamnus fasciculatus, Yucca whipplei, Isocoma menziesii, and Malosma laurina. The herbaceous layer is variable.
