Description: This fourwing saltbush type is found in the southern Great Plains of the United States. Stands occur in dry barren flats, slopes, and bluffs. Soils are shallow, rocky, and alkaline. The vegetation is dominated by shrubs between 0.5 and 1 m tall. In Kansas, the dominant shrub is Atriplex canescens, with associated species being Rhus aromatica, Toxicodendron rydbergii and Yucca glauca. The herbaceous layer of short to medium tall grasses includes Bouteloua gracilis and Bouteloua curtipendula.
