Description: This shrubland alliance of the low-elevation cismontane regions of central and southern California occurs on steep, north-facing slopes between 600 and 950 m elevation. Stands are best developed on deep soils. The precipitation regime is strongly seasonal, with precipitation falling as rain between November and April. Yearly rainfall totals average approximately 50 cm. Stands of this shrubland are dominated by Ceanothus oliganthus. Other shrubs present may include Quercus chrysolepis, Adenostoma fasciculatum, Toxicodendron diversilobum, Quercus dumosa, Rhus ovata, and Heteromeles arbutifolia. Emergent trees may be present. The herbaceous layer is sparse.
