Reference: Eastern Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Shrub fens in the Northeast and Pacific Northwest dominated by Myrica gale that occur in weakly to moderately minerotrophic settings, i.e., pondshores, adjacent to marshes, swamps, or peatlands, or along slow-moving streams. Vegetation is characterized by Myrica gale and Spiraea spp. (Spiraea latifolia and Spiraea tomentosa in the Northeast and Spiraea douglasii in the Northwest). Tall shrubs may be present. The herb layer is comprised of graminoids and forbs; Carex utriculata is ubiquitous. Additional species in the Northeast include Carex lasiocarpa, Carex stricta, Carex canescens, and Triadenum virginicum, and in the Northwest include Carex aquatilis, Deschampsia caespitosa, and Sanguisorba officinalis. The nonvascular layer commonly is dominated by Sphagnum species.
