Name: Pinus (rigida, echinata) - Quercus coccinea Forest Alliance
Reference: Eastern Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This broadly defined alliance contains dry oak - pine forests occurring on nutrient-poor, usually acidic, well-drained to dry soils that often occur in association with pine barrens or dry oak forests. Quercus velutina, Quercus coccinea, and Quercus alba are the most common oaks, and Pinus rigida or, less commonly, Pinus echinata are often codominant. A dense ericaceous shrub layer is characteristic of this alliance, and includes Gaylussacia baccata, Vaccinium angustifolium, Vaccinium pallidum, Gaylussacia frondosa, as well as Comptonia peregrina. Quercus ilicifolia or Quercus prinoides may occur sporadically. Herbaceous species such as Pteridium aquilinum, Gaultheria procumbens, Cypripedium acaule, and Schizachyrium scoparium are scattered and usually confined to openings. This alliance is floristically and ecologically related to the Pinus rigida Woodland Alliance (A.524). This alliance occurs in southern New England, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, discontinuously at higher elevations in the southern Appalachians. This alliance also occurs in the Southeast Region.
