Description: Wet-mesic forests of the Outer Coastal Plain of Louisiana, occurring on low ridges of the antecedent Mississippi River. Forests of related environments of South Carolina and possibly Georgia are included here as well. This alliance as presently defined is near the upland/wetland boundary; examples are constantly moist and sometimes have a high water table. The canopy is dominated by ~Quercus virginiana, Magnolia grandiflora$, and ~Quercus pagoda$, with lesser amounts of ~Liquidambar styraciflua$ and ~Quercus nigra$. The open understory consists of ~Cornus florida, Ilex opaca var. opaca$, and ~Ilex decidua$. Woody vines are abundant, especially ~Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Toxicodendron radicans$, and ~Campsis radicans$. The herb layer is well-developed and includes species such as ~Asplenium platyneuron, Sanicula$ sp., ~Elephantopus carolinianus$, and ~Thelypteris kunthii$.
