Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: These forests are common in the southern Cascades and less extensive in the Klamath-Siskiyou region. The association is typically a closed-canopy forest with gaps at boulders. Elevations average 1650 m (5420 feet). Slopes range between 3 and 50% and are usually west or northwest-facing. Soils are loamy sands with parent material varies from andesite and basalt to diorite and granite. The tree canopy is codominated by Abies concolor and Abies X shastensis which average about 29% and 19% cover, respectively. The understory is extremely sparse, and includes Rosa gymnocarpa, about 2% cover at most sites, and Chimaphila umbellata with about 8% cover.
