Name: Acer negundo Temporarily Flooded Woodland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This is a narrowly distributed alliance, found in narrow, sandstone box-canyons of the Colorado Plateau region. Elevations are reported to be less than 1860 m. Stands are found on immediate riverbanks, within 2 m of the active channel. The stream channel is highly sinuous with well-developed sandy point bars (Rosgen's Channel Type: C5). Soils are shallow to deep (up to 1.5 m) sands, or loam over cobbles. This alliance is dominated by Acer negundo in the tree canopy, with 40-70% cover, and Betula occidentalis in the shrub canopy. Other common shrub species include Forestiera pubescens, Salix exigua, and the vine Clematis ligusticifolia. The herbaceous layer is generally sparse, but occasionally with high cover of Poa pratensis, Equisetum hyemale, and Phalaris arundinacea (= Phalaroides arundinacea). Adjacent riparian and upland vegetation is Salix exigua-dominated shrublands and Pinus edulis - Juniperus osteosperma woodlands, respectively.
