Name: Polemonium viscosum Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This alliance occurs in the alpine tundra in the mountains of Colorado. Stands are found in the upper alpine zone between 3350-3650 m elevation. Stands are located in areas that support Trifolium dasyphyllum- or Silene acaulis-dominated communities, but that have been extensively disturbed by pocket gopher activity. The soils are poorly developed, but have a high organic matter content. The soil profile often has two A horizons, with the remnants of older soil horizons buried beneath recently deposited material from pocket gopher digging. The number of herbaceous species is low. Polemonium viscosum dominates the herbaceous canopy. Campanula rotundifolia, Geum rossii, Mertensia oblongifolia (= Mertensia viridis), Polygonum bistortoides, and Smelowskia calycina are common associates. Moss and lichen species are usually absent.
