Name: Equisetum fluviatile Semipermanently Flooded Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This marsh alliance of the northwestern United States occurs in shallow (<1 m) water over mineral soils, usually sand or silt. Stands are often located along wave-washed shores and stream channels. In Washington, stands are located along tidal reaches of the Columbia River, where the water level rises and falls with the tides. The water is nearly fresh with a very low salt content. In Montana, stands occur in still water and on wet ground along the margins of ponds and backwater areas of streams. Stands are also described from Lake Superior. Equisetum fluviatile is the most abundant species and occasionally forms monotypic stands. In mixed stands, the graminoids Eleocharis palustris (= Eleocharis smallii), Carex rostrata, Glyceria grandis, and Scirpus spp. and the forbs Bidens cernua and Mentha arvensis may be present.
