Description: This association occurs in the coastal mountains of Oregon and possibly northern California. Stands occur at elevations of 540-1115 m (1780-3660 feet) on all aspects and slopes, but are commonly associated with flat sites at the upper third of slopes. These forests are characterized by a very shrubby understory. Pseudotsuga menziesii and Chrysolepis chrysophylla (= Castanopsis chrysophylla) dominate the upper canopy layer with 42-66% and 9-33% cover, respectively. Important understory trees are Pseudotsuga menziesii (1-20%) and Lithocarpus densiflorus (10%). Other important plants include Rhododendron macrophyllum (41%), Mahonia nervosa (= var. nervosa) (4-6%), and Gaultheria shallon (0-61%). Moss cover is can be as high as 22%.
