Description: This alliance, found in the northern Great Plains, is a sandy shrubland in a prairie matrix. Vegetation cover is high but stands are not extensive. The vegetation is characterized by scattered or sometimes clumped shrubs with graminoids dominating the interstices. Betula occidentalis is the characteristic shrub, often accompanied by Juniperus horizontalis. Calamovilfa longifolia is often a dominant in the herbaceous stratum. Betula occidentalis achieves its maximum abundance on flat sandy soil.
