Name: Crataegus douglasii Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Communities within this alliance are found throughout the Columbia Basin of the interior Pacific Northwest, a semi-arid region with cold winters and warm summers with insufficient precipitation. Elevations of occurrence range from 400-750 m. This alliance is typically found on aggraded valley floors which border intermittent or permanent streams and have dependable soil moisture through the growing season. Soils are generally accumulated glacial outwash composed of fine silts and clays of moderate depth. Stands of this alliance often extend up adjacent north-facing toeslopes where seepage provides constant moisture. Vegetation within this alliance is usually a dense thicket of the broad-leaved deciduous shrub Crataegus douglasii with a canopy 5-7 m in height. Other tall shrubs, such as Betula occidentalis, Alnus incana, or Amelanchier alnifolia, may share the upper canopy. A short-shrub layer of cold-deciduous species is typically present, and dominated by Symphoricarpos albus, Rosa woodsii, or Rosa nutkana. The herbaceous layer is composed of perennial grasses, such as Leymus cinereus (= Elymus cinereus), Deschampsia caespitosa, or Elymus glaucus, and perennial forbs, including Achillea millefolium, Besseya rubra, Galium boreale, Geranium viscosissimum, Iris missouriensis, Lithophragma parviflorum, Potentilla arguta, and Potentilla gracilis. The understory vegetation of many stands within this alliance is very degraded by livestock grazing and contains stands of Poa pratensis or Phleum pratense. There is a phase within associations of this type which contains a tree layer of Populus tremuloides, but this phase apparently does not differ from typical stands in environmental characteristics.
