Name: Salix brachycarpa Seasonally Flooded Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Vegetation types within the Salix brachycarpa Seasonally Flooded Shrubland Alliance (A.998) are widespread in the upper montane and subalpine areas in the western United States. They range in elevation from 2000 m to 4050 m. Stands typically occur along the drier fringes of broad, glaciated basins and along broad, straight streams in the subalpine zone. They occupy elevated hummocks and drier sideslopes, often surrounding wetter, low areas vegetated with Salix planifolia associations. Stands can also occur on low floodplains (0-10% slope) immediately adjacent to the stream channel. Landforms can include wet meadows, slopes, fens, wet alkaline or marly barrens, and streambanks. Soil textures typically include loam, sandy clay loam, and silty clay loam. Mottles may also be present in the first layer of the profile. In California, Salix brachycarpa communities can be found on limestone. Salix planifolia and Salix wolfii shrublands occur on adjacent wet swales and hummocks. Carex aquatilis and Carex utriculata meadows occur on adjacent flat, saturated areas. Abies lasiocarpa - Picea engelmannii / Calamagrostis canadensis forests also occur in adjacent riparian areas. Communities within this alliance are characterized as seasonally flooded, cold-deciduous shrublands. Salix brachycarpa is the dominant shrub in this plant association with 25-60% cover. Other shrubs include 5-10% cover of Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda (= Pentaphylloides floribunda), Salix wolfii, and 0-5% cover of Salix monticola. The herbaceous undergrowth is a thick carpet of grasses and grass-like plants dominated by 15-30% cover of Carex aquatilis and Carex utriculata. Other graminoids include 10-25% cover of Juncus balticus, Carex scopulorum, and Deschampsia caespitosa. Forb cover includes 0-30% Thermopsis divaricarpa, Maianthemum stellatum, and Potentilla sp.
