Name: Picea rubens / Acer rubrum / Maianthemum canadense - (Lycopodium clavatum, Lycopodium dendroideum) Forest
Reference: Fleming, G. P., and P. P. Coulli...
Description: This association occurs on both gentle slopes bordering high-elevation valley floors and on more exposed ridge crests and rocky summits in the high Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia, Virginia, and possibly Maryland and Pennsylvania. Sites range from mesic to submesic and are characterized by cold winter microclimates, frequent fog, and high annual precipitation. Stands are dominated by Picea rubens, which is characteristic. Acer rubrum, Betula alleghaniensis, Prunus serotina, and Tsuga canadensis are usually minor canopy associates but may be codominant locally, particularly on disturbed sites. In well-developed stands, young Picea rubens is plentiful in understory layers, along with Acer rubrum and scattered Tsuga canadensis. Shrub layers are normally very sparse. Herb layer composition varies with soil moisture and light regimes. Maianthemum canadense, Carex debilis var. rudgei, and Dryopteris intermedia are frequent herbs throughout, while Lycopodium dendroideum, Lycopodium clavatum, and Oxalis montana are prominent in more mesic situations. Vaccinium angustifolium and Carex brunnescens ssp. sphaerostachya may be common on exposed, rocky, submesic sites.
