Name: Abies amabilis / Lysichiton americanus Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association occurs in the Olympic Mountains and northwestern Cascade Range in Washington and extends north into the coastal mountains of British Columbia. This is a needle-leaved evergreen conifer forest dominated by Tsuga heterophylla, Abies amabilis, and Thuja plicata. Picea sitchensis can be present in small amounts. The understory has a moderately dense to open deciduous broad-leaved shrub layer about 0.7-2.5 m tall, with Vaccinium ovalifolium, Oplopanax horridus, and Rubus spectabilis being the major species. Menziesia ferruginea is frequent in small amounts, and the evergreen shrub Gaultheria shallon is important in the Olympic Mountains. The herbaceous layer is well-developed and typically dominated by Lysichiton americanus. Many other forbs and ferns may occur, especially Clintonia uniflora, Blechnum spicant, Rubus pedatus, Streptopus lanceolatus var. curvipes (= Streptopus roseus), Maianthemum dilatatum, Athyrium filix-femina, and Cornus unalaschkensis. Sites are found primarily at 250-900 m elevation in Washington, at 650-1350 m in southern British Columbia and from near sea level to 700 m in central British Columbia. These are moist, cool climatic zones where snowpack is moderate. Soils are saturated and typically organic. This association is distinguished from similar associations by at least 5% cover of Lysichiton americanus and 10% cover of Abies amabilis, along with little to no Tsuga mertensiana (no more than 10% cover).
