Name: Pinus strobus - Quercus (alba, rubra) Wooded Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Midwestern Ecology Working Group...
Description: This alliance is composed of herbaceous communities with a scattered tree layer found on infertile sites in the Great Lakes region. The dominant herbaceous stratum is dominated by graminoid species which are adapted to the dry conditions. These include Carex pensylvanica, Danthonia spicata, and Schizachyrium scoparium. The tree layer is composed of both evergreen and deciduous species and typically has 10-30% canopy. Pinus strobus, Quercus alba, Quercus ellipsoidalis, Quercus rubra, and Quercus velutina are all common. Arctostaphylos uva-ursi and Vaccinium spp. are typical shrubs. This alliance is found on flat to moderately steep slopes. Stands occur on infertile sites either with sandy soil or shallow soil over bedrock. These sites are most commonly found on outwash plains or where granite bedrock is at or near the surface.
