Name: Achnatherum hymenoides Shale Barren Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Occurs in a high elevation mountain basin between 2200 and 2300 m elevation in north-central Colorado. The basin is surrounded by mountain ranges of the southern Rockies, and is semi-arid. It also has been found in western Colorado where it was described as an large island surrounded by agricultural fields. This association is described as a topo-edaphic climax, occurring on soils derived from shales or mudstones. It occupies stabilized badlands with rolling topography, commonly on ridgetops exposed to wind, desiccation and sheet erosion. Soils are clayey, loamy, calcareous and shallow, often capped by a thin gravel layer. The vegetation of this association is poorly described. Total vegetative cover is sparse and bare soil covers 75% of the ground surface. The perennial bunchgrass Achnatherum hymenoides (= Oryzopsis hymenoides) codominates with the low, mat-forming woody forb Eriogonum brevicaule. Other associated species include the shrub Krascheninnikovia lanata, and forb Stenotus armerioides (= Haplopappus armerioides). As many as 40 species may occur in this association, but no species list is available.
