Name: Spartina spartinae Tidal Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This alliance consists of irregularly tidally flooded marshes dominated by Spartina spartinae. Examples of this alliance are known from the Gulf Coast of Texas to the Florida Keys, with the exception of Louisiana. It could extend south into Mexico, and could possibly exist in the Chenier Plain of Louisiana. It occurs in areas that are generally somewhat hypersaline from evaporation of seawater after storm surges or exceptionally high tides. It is distinguished from non-tidal (and usually taller) inland Spartina spartinae marshes, placed in Spartina spartinae Saturated Herbaceous Alliance (A.1230). Other species present can include Monanthochloe littoralis, Sporobolus virginicus, Suaeda linearis, Batis maritima, Borrichia frutescens, and Distichlis spicata.
