Name: Ligusticum tenuifolium Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This alliance occurs in the alpine tundra in the mountains of Colorado. Stands are found in the lower alpine zone between 3290 and 3550 m elevation on moist streambanks and lakeshores. Stands are also located in the subalpine zone, just below treeline. Soils are relatively deep and nutrient-rich for high-elevation conditions. Soils have a high organic matter content and are classified as Inceptisols (Cryochrepts and Cryaquepts). A number of herbaceous species occur in the alliance, forming a dense canopy. Ligusticum tenuifolium, Trollius laxus, and Erigeron peregrinus codominate the herbaceous layer. Caltha leptosepala, Castilleja rhexiifolia, Oxypolis fendleri, Veronica wormskjoldii (= Veronica nutans), Carex nova, and Poa cusickii ssp. epilis (= Poa epilis) are common associates. Brachythecium erythrorrhizon, Mnium blyttii, and Tortula ruralis are common moss species.
