Name: Pinus lambertiana - Pinus ponderosa - Pseudotsuga menziesii / Festuca californica Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Average elevation for this association is 3050 feet, aspect is variable, though generally not north. Slopes average 32%, with a range of 15-65%. Slope position ranges from mid-slope to ridgetop. Parent materials are composed of andesite, basalt, mixed ultramafics, schist and diorite. Surface texture is loam, with 20-40% gravel and cobbles. Subsurface texture is loam with 60% cobbles. This mixed conifer association is dominated by Pinus ponderosa and Pseudotsuga menziesii, both with low cover, averaging 16% and 17%, respectively. Pinus lambertiana is a constant canopy associate found at low cover. The regeneration layer is dominated by Pinus ponderosa, with Pseudotsuga menziesii frequently occurring. Pinus lambertiana, Calocedrus decurrens, Abies concolor, and Quercus chrysolepis also commonly occur in the regeneration layer. Arbutus menziesii, Quercus garryana, Chrysolepis chrysophylla, and Acer macrophyllum are rarely present. Toxicodendron diversilobum is the only commonly occurring shrub. Madia madioides and Iris chrysophylla commonly occur, while Festuca californica and Fragaria vesca are occasional. Moss cover averages 4%.
