Name: Aletes anisatus Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Vegetation included in this alliance occurs on scree and gravel slides in canyons, and on hill and mountain slopes in the Colorado Rockies. Elevations range from 1800-3050 m. Sites are on moderately steep to steep slopes with a loose rocky surface. Soils are poorly developed, dry and rocky. Parent materials include volcanic rock, and possibly shale if these communities also occur where individuals of Aletes anisatus were collected in the Piceance Basin in western Colorado. Stands of this alliance have an herbaceous layer dominated or codominated by the cespitose perennial forb Aletes anisatus and the rhizomatous forb Scutellaria brittonii. Other principal forb species include Maianthemum stellatum, Physaria acutifolia, Clematis occidentalis, Paronychia jamesii, Oenothera caespitosa, Penstemon glaber var. brandegeei, and Eriogonum flavum. The shrub Rubus idaeus and the grass Bromus inermis ssp. pumpellianus may also be present.
