Name: Lupinus arboreus Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This California alliance of stabilized coastal dunes, headlands and terraces thrives in a Mediterranean climate. Precipitation, which falls as rain, occurs primarily between November and April. Frequent coastal fogs ameliorate the summer dry season. Temperatures are moderated by the proximity of the ocean, so frosts are exceedingly rare, as are temperatures in excess of 25 degrees C. Stands are restricted to the immediate coastal zone, and are usually found at elevations of less than 30 m. The nominal species of this coastal California shrubland alliance, Lupinus arboreus, is very successful at colonizing and enriching sand. Lupinus arboreus is the sole or dominant shrub in the canopy. Other shrubs present may include Ambrosia chamissonis, Scrophularia californica, Baccharis pilularis, Ericameria ericoides, Alnus rubra, Bromus diandrus, Anthoxanthum odoratum, Morella californica (= Myrica californica), and Abronia latifolia. The herbaceous layer is highly variable, but often includes graminoids.
