Name: Saussurea americana Temporarily Flooded Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Stands included in this alliance occur in moist subalpine meadows in the northeastern Olympic Mountains in Washington. Elevations range from 1350-1500 m. Although climate is maritime-influenced, the location is relatively dry because it is in a rainshadow on the lee side of the mountains from the prevailing winds. This dense herbaceous vegetation is restricted to shallow gullies and small streams that are temporarily flooded with snowmelt in the spring and remain moist throughout the growing season. Sites are in low areas and are gently to moderately sloping, often with southern aspects. Stands have a lush herbaceous layer (93% total cover) that can be divided into three distinctive dominated layers: tall- and short-forb layers and low ground cover or 'creepers'. The tall-forb layer is most the conspicuous layer. It is dominated by Saussurea americana and Heracleum maximum with moderate cover or high frequency of Hydrophyllum occidentale, Senecio integerrimus, Thalictrum occidentale, and lower cover and frequency of Delphinium glaucum, Pedicularis bracteosa, Lupinus arcticus ssp. subalpinus (= Lupinus latifolius var. subalpinus), and Artemisia douglasiana. Several graminoids also occur in this layer, such as Elymus glaucus, Bromus aleutensis, and Festuca subulata. Viola glabella is the dominant and diagnostic of the short-forb layer with Symphyotrichum foliaceum (= Aster foliaceus), Epilobium lactiflorum (= Epilobium alpinum var. lactiflorum), and Mitella breweri usually present. Vicia americana forms a low ground cover layer.
