Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Found only along a few streams on the northwest slope of the Blue Mountains of Oregon and Washington, this riparian forest community usually has Alnus rubra as the sole tree species in a closed canopy. This community types typically lines "V-shaped" valleys with moderate gradient (2-7%) along 5- to 50-foot wide streams between the elevations of 610 to 915 m (2000-3500 feet). Individual Abies grandis or Pseudotsuga menziesii trees may be seen on long stabilized terraces. The community is floristically characterized as having a tall deciduous layer dominated or containing Physocarpus capitatus and/or Philadelphus lewisii although Cornus sericea or Symphoricarpos albus can be dominant. Characteristic herbaceous species are Maianthemum stellatum, Heracleum maximum, Mitella pentandra, Osmorhiza berteroi, and Angelica arguta, although Petasites frigidus var. palmatus, Tiarella trifoliata var. unifoliata, Carex deweyana, or Cinna latifolia can be dominant.
