Name: Picea rubens / Rhododendron catawbiense Forest
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This association includes Picea rubens-dominated forests, outside the range of Abies fraseri, but with a shrub component that includes Rhododendron catawbiense. These forests occur on exposed ridges and convex slopes in West Virginia. This forest has at least 75% of the canopy comprised of Picea rubens and greater than 25% shrub cover with at least 50% of the total shrub cover comprised of evergreen shrubs, typically Rhododendron catawbiense, Rhododendron maximum, Rhododendron carolinianum, or Kalmia latifolia. Herbaceous cover is typically sparse, but where the shrub stratum is more open, a moderate herb stratum may develop. These forests occur on ridges and convex slopes with south and southwest exposures above 1370 m (4500 feet) elevation, often adjacent to montane shrublands.
