Name:
Fraxinus nigra - Abies balsamea / Rhamnus alnifolia Forest
Reference:
Eastern Ecology Working Group of...
Description:
The vegetation is an open to closed canopy dominated by stunted Fraxinus nigra and Abies balsamea occurring at 3200 feet. elevation on Greenbrier limestone on a moist, flat, basin floor with somewhat poorly drained organic soils that are periodically saturated and possibly periodically inundated. The soil profile ranges from 14 cm organic muck over a silt loam or clay layer to greater than 67 cm organic muck. Other tree species occurring in the canopy include Tsuga canadensis, Betula alleghaniensis, Prunus spp., Acer rubrum, and Picea rubens. The tall-shrub layer ranges from 5-45% cover and is dominated by Alnus incana ssp. rugosa (= Alnus rugosa) and Ilex verticillata, and includes Rhododendron maximum, Viburnum nudum var. cassinoides, and Hamamelis virginiana. A short-shrub layer is dominated by Rhamnus alnifolia and Cornus amomum, in association with Kalmia latifolia, Sambucus canadensis, Viburnum dentatum, Chimaphila umbellata, and Smilax tamnoides (= Smilax hispida). The herbaceous ground layer is extensive and diverse, ranging from 80-95% cover and including 25-30 species. The most abundant species include Onoclea sensibilis, Viola cucullata, Glyceria melicaria, Packera aurea (= Senecio aureus), Polygonum sagittatum, and several Carex species. Other species include Maianthemum canadense, Polemonium vanbruntiae, Oxypolis rigidior, Caltha palustris, Galium asprellum, and Impatiens capensis. A few globally rare species such as Euphorbia purpurea and Polemonium vanbruntiae are associated with this community.
