Description: This riparian woodland alliance has been described from drainages in narrow valleys and canyons in the Rocky Mountains. Stands are often narrow, occurring in floodplains on alluvial terraces of rivers, and along stream channels where there is cold-air drainage. Sites are flat to gently sloping and are temporarily flooded in the spring. Substrates are moderately deep, alluvial soils with textures ranging from sand to loam. They are saturated in the spring, and then dry out by late summer, when the water table drops below 1 m. Vegetation included in this riparian woodland alliance is characterized by a relatively sparse to moderately dense tree canopy that is dominated by the conifer ~Pseudotsuga menziesii$ with occasional ~Pinus ponderosa$ or ~Pinus contorta$ trees. Scattered individuals of ~Populus tremuloides, Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa$ or ~Populus angustifolia$ may be present in the tree canopy. A moderately dense to dense short-shrub layer is typically present that is dominated by ~Cornus sericea$ or ~Betula occidentalis$ with ~Rosa woodsii, Rhus trilobata, Alnus incana, Acer glabrum, Prunus virginiana$, and several species of ~Salix$. The herbaceous layer is generally sparse because of the dense shade from the tree and shrub canopies. Common herbaceous species may include ~Carex geyeri, Actaea rubra, Clematis ligusticifolia, Equisetum$ spp., ~Heterotheca villosa$, and ~Maianthemum$ spp. Diagnostic of this riparian alliance is the dominance of ~Pseudotsuga menziesii$ in the open tree layer of woodlands that are flooded for brief periods during the growing season and have a shallow water table.
