Name: Parkinsonia florida Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This riparian shrubland alliance occurs in the Sonoran and Colorado deserts. Stands are generally restricted to the margins of washes and braided, unstable channels on bajadas in the more arid Colorado Desert, but may occur on terraces if the water table is not deep. Sites are generally flat or gently sloping and vegetation occurs on all aspects. Parent material is usually sandy or gravelly alluvium. Substrates are generally coarse-textured, but may include gravelly silt loams. The soils are generally not saline. Vegetation included in this alliance is characterized by a sparse shrub layer dominated by Parkinsonia florida. Other characteristic shrubs and trees may include Acacia constricta, Acacia greggii, Chilopsis linearis, Lycium spp., Parkinsonia microphylla, Prosopis glandulosa, Prosopis pubescens, Psorothamnus spinosus, and Ziziphus obtusifolia. Shrubby cacti, such as Opuntia acanthocarpa, Opuntia leptocaulis, Opuntia imbricata, Opuntia phaeacantha, are common. The sparse graminoid layer is dominated by the perennial bunchgrass Hilaria belangeri. Sparse annual grasses include Aristida adscensionis, Bouteloua aristidoides, and Leptochloa panicea ssp. brachiata (= Leptochloa filiformis). Forb cover is also sparse, but it can be relatively diverse. Common forbs include Euphorbia spp., Heliomeris longifolia var. annua, Matelea parvifolia, and Pectis filipes. Diagnostic of this alliance is the sparse shrub layer dominated by Parkinsonia florida without significant cover of Olneya tesota.
