Name: Antennaria lanata Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This alliance occurs in snowmelt basins and subalpine meadows of the Cascade Range at 1800-2200 m elevation. These habitats receive abundant (100-250 cm) precipitation and accumulate very heavy snowpacks in winter. These sites are subirrigated by snowmelt during most of the short growing season. This vegetation is characterized by a ground layer of Antennaria lanata, a perennial forb less than 30 cm in height. Associated herbaceous species include Luetkea pectinata, Arenaria capillaris, Minuartia obtusiloba (= Arenaria obtusiloba), Juncus drummondii, Luzula piperi, Luzula spicata, Festuca brachyphylla, Carex nigricans, Carex spectabilis, Carex scirpoidea, Carex phaeocephala, Carex breweri, and Sibbaldia procumbens. Salix cascadensis and Cassiope mertensiana may form a very sparse shrub layer. Lichens and bryophyte species are often abundant, including Polytrichum piliferum, Polytrichum juniperinum, Lepraria neglecta, Cetraria islandica, and Cladonia pyxidata.
