Name: Pinus palustris - Pinus serotina / Quercus chapmanii - Quercus myrtifolia - Quercus geminata - Lyonia ferruginea Woodland
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This association occurs on Leon soils on barrier islands, with 30-40% pine cover and 100% shrubby oak cover (nearly impenetrable). The natural fire frequency is believed to be from 20-30 years. The open canopy of this association is dominated by a combination of Pinus palustris and Pinus serotina, with Quercus chapmanii, Quercus myrtifolia, Quercus geminata, and Lyonia ferruginea in the subcanopy or shrub layers. Other characteristic species include Serenoa repens. This naturally rare type is restricted to the barrier islands of Georgia and Florida, such as Big Talbot Island, Florida, and probably Sapelo Island, Georgia.
