Description: The Ceanothus cuneatus Shrubland Alliance (A.765) occurs mostly on dry alluvial fans, slopes, and ridges. The alliance occurs in various elevational zones throughout its range. Precipitation is very seasonal, with long, dry summers and cool, moist winters. Precipitation varies from about 60 cm per year in the northern part of the range to less than 30 cm per year at the southern limits. Stands of this western shrubland alliance are dominated by Ceanothus cuneatus. Other shrubs present may include Salvia mellifera, Adenostoma fasciculatum, Arctostaphylos manzanita, Arctostaphylos patula, Arctostaphylos tomentosa ssp. tomentosa, Ceanothus integerrimus, Garrya fremontii, Rhamnus ilicifolia (= Rhamnus crocea ssp. ilicifolia), Calocedrus decurrens, Quercus dumosa, Elymus elymoides, and Heteromeles arbutifolia. Emergent conifers may be present. The herbaceous layer is sparse.
