Name: Pinus ponderosa / Carex inops ssp. heliophila Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This ponderosa pine / sedge woodland community type is found in the Black Hills region, adjacent Great Plains and northern Rocky Mountain front range. Stands occur in the most mesic of the habitat types with a graminoid-dominated ground layer. They are generally found on moderate south- and west-facing slopes in the western Dakotas, and eastern parts of Wyoming and Montana. The community is dominated by Pinus ponderosa with occasional Juniperus scopulorum and Quercus macrocarpa in the subcanopy. Shrubs are relatively uncommon in this type. The herbaceous layer is dominated by Carex inops ssp. heliophila, with inclusions of Danthonia spicata, Schizachyrium scoparium, and Pseudoroegneria spicata, generally in areas with more open canopies.
