Name: Batis maritima Tidal Dwarf-shrubland Alliance
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This alliance consists of small to large tidal flats dominated by Batis maritima, typically with saltwater-tidal irregularly flooded hydrology. Other species can include Sarcocornia perennis, Sporobolus virginicus, Borrichia frutescens, Suaeda linearis, Lycium carolinianum, Spartina spartinae, Monanthochloe littoralis, Sesuvium portulacastrum, and Blutaparon vermiculare. This alliance occurs especially in salt panne situations, where tidal saltwater evaporates, augmenting salinity. This is a subtropical alliance, which ranges northwards into the warmest portions of the temperate southeastern United States. Its occurrence in the South Atlantic Coastal Plain is uncertain. This community may occur in areas up to at least 100 hectares.
