Name: Senecio taraxacoides Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Vegetation in this alliance occurs on rocky talus slopes in the alpine tundra in the Colorado Front Range. Stands are found in the lower subnival zone, the area just below permanent snow and ice, on north-facing aspects, on gentle- to moderate-gradient, unstable, moving scree slopes. The ground is covered with rocks that are snow-covered in winter. Soils are young and poorly developed, and the majority of the ground surface is covered with rock. The vegetation in the alliance occurs as patches in mesic microsites between the rocks. The herbaceous layer is sparse. Senecio taraxacoides and Oxyria digyna are the dominant species, with Besseya alpina, Cirsium scopulorum, and Senecio fremontii var. blitoides the most common associates. The cryptogam cover is sparse; Hypnum revolutum is the most common moss species, and Cladonia pyxidata is the most common lichen present.
