Name: Picea sitchensis / Lysichiton americanus Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This plant association is a minor type in south-central Alaska's rainforests. It occurs on floodplains and undisturbed north-aspect foot slopes with less than 15% slope and at less than 30 m (100 feet) elevation. Picea sitchensis is the dominant conifer with Tsuga heterophylla occasionally occurring as a minor associate. There are no shrub species dominant in this type, but Alnus viridis ssp. sinuata (= Alnus crispa ssp. sinuata), Oplopanax horridus (= Echinopanax horridus), Vaccinium ovalifolium, and Rubus spectabilis may be present. Lysichiton americanus is well represented in the undergrowth. Herbaceous species with high constancy but low cover include Rubus pedatus, Cornus canadensis, Tiarella trifoliata, Streptopus amplexifolius, Dryopteris expansa (= Dryopteris dilatata), Gymnocarpium dryopteris, and Phegopteris connectilis (= Thelypteris phegopteris).
