Name: Psorothamnus spinosus Intermittently Flooded Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This xeromorphic tall shrubland alliance occurs locally in moderate-sized washes in the Mojave, Colorado and Sonoran deserts. Stands are restricted to growing in intermittently flooded channels. Substrates are typically sandy-textured alluvium without cobbles or boulders. It may form a matrix with other wash vegetation alliances. The vegetation is characterized by an open, xeromorphic, tall-shrub layer (3-5 m tall) that is dominated by Psorothamnus spinosus. Individuals may reach 4 m. Other tall shrubs/small trees present may include Acacia greggii, Chilopsis linearis, Olneya tesota, or Parkinsonia florida. A sparse short-shrub layer of species such as Ambrosia dumosa, Bebbia juncea, Baccharis emoryi, Encelia farinosa, Ericameria spp., Hymenoclea salsola, Hyptis emoryi, Larrea tridentata, Petalonyx thurberi, or Stephanomeria pauciflora may also be present. The herbaceous layer is sparse and consists of annuals or is absent.
