Description: This calcareous fen community occurs in Lower New England/Northern Piedmont and adjacent ecoregions. It is characterized by short cespitose sedges mixed with more robust species as well as moderately deep peat (generally 50-200 cm) accumulation. These fens are generally flat but may have a gentle slope. Characteristic herbs include Carex aquatilis, Carex flava, Carex hystericina, Carex interior, Carex leptalea, Carex lacustris, Carex sterilis, Eriophorum viridicarinatum, and Muhlenbergia glomerata. Shrubs are not abundant (typically less than 50% cover) but include Cornus amomum, Cornus sericea, Salix spp., Amelanchier arborea, Photinia melanocarpa (= Aronia melanocarpa), Rhamnus alnifolia, Ribes hirtellum, and Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda.
