Name: Thuja occidentalis - Betula alleghaniensis Forest Alliance
Reference: Midwestern Ecology Working Group...
Description: This alliance, found in the western Great Lakes region, is characterized by mesic, upland forests. The canopy is codominated by two species, Thuja occidentalis and Betula alleghaniensis. Associated trees include Acer saccharum, Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera, and Tsuga canadensis (in the eastern portion of this alliance's range). In Wisconsin, Acer saccharum may be relatively more common and Betula alleghaniensis less so. The understory usually contains a well-developed shrub layer. Acer spicatum and Taxus canadensis are the most abundant species in this layer. Herbaceous species include Clintonia borealis, Dryopteris campyloptera, Lycopodium spp., Maianthemum canadense, and Trientalis borealis. Stands of this alliance occur on poorly drained lowland soils. The soil in northern Wisconsin was reported as moderately acidic sandy clay with a thin litter layer (Beals and Cottam 1960), although Eyre (1980) stated that Thuja occidentalis grew best on neutral to slightly alkaline sites.
