Name: Abies lasiocarpa / Jamesia americana Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This high-elevation forest is dominated by Abies lasiocarpa. Picea engelmannii is not present. Pseudotsuga menziesii and Populus tremuloides are major serial species in the forest canopy. Abies concolor may be a minor serial species. Shrub cover is high, dominated by Jamesia americana (diagnostic) with Ribes pinetorum, Rubus idaeus, Sambucus racemosa var. melanocarpa (= Sambucus melanocarpa), and Symphoricarpos oreophilus. Herbaceous cover is sparse and patchy, with graminoids essentially absent and forb diversity low. Vicia americana is most common with traces of Aquilegia spp., Galium spp., Pteridium aquilinum, Orthilia secunda (= Ramischia secunda), Senecio spp., Viola canadensis, and Woodsia spp. This association is restricted to cold-mesic, steep, talus northern slopes near the summit of Mt. Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains in southeastern Arizona.
