Name: Picea sitchensis Saturated Forest Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Vegetation included in this forest alliance occurs on perennially saturated coastal sites from northern California to southern British Columbia. Elevations are usually below 1000 m and typically near sea level. The climate is maritime, with annual precipitation ranging from 65-550 cm, the majority of which falls as rain. Summer rain decreases to the south, but coastal fogs and drizzle are characteristic throughout the region. These forests often occur on beach plains and marine terraces. Stands have perennially waterlogged, mucky peat soils above tidal influence. Soil texture is often sand with slightly acid pH. On Vancouver Island, Canada, this vegetation type is found on low-lying troughs of beach ridges. In Oregon it occurs in depressions between old stabilized dunes, and on floodplains adjacent to perennial streams. Environmental information on other stands was not available. Stands have a moderately dense to dense tree canopy dominated by Picea sitchensis. Alnus rubra is present to codominant with lesser amounts of Tsuga heterophylla and Thuja plicata. Northern stands may also have Chamaecyparis nootkatensis. Some of the trees may be stunted because of the excessively wet conditions. Shrub layers are present in stands with more open tree canopies and may include dense stands of Alnus rubra, Malus fusca, Lonicera involucrata, Rubus spectabilis, or Salix hookeriana. Gaultheria shallon, Vaccinium spp., and Acer circinatum may occur in drier habitats such as on mounds or logs. The herbaceous layer is a mixture of graminoids, forbs and ferns, such as Carex obnupta, Lysichiton americanus, Oenanthe sarmentosa, Maianthemum dilatatum, Athyrium filix-femina or Polystichum munitum.
