Description: This is an open-canopy forest (cover about 60-80%) which develops on dry, moderately thin soils over neutral to basic shales in the northeastern Ridge and Valley of Tennessee. The canopy also contains Carya alba, Carya glabra, and Carya ovata. The open subcanopy contains Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana and Amelanchier arborea. The herbaceous layer is sparse. Spring observations include Carex pensylvanica, Luzula echinata, Cardamine concatenata, Hieracium venosum, and Aureolaria sp. Silene caroliniana ssp. pensylvanica, which is rare in Tennessee, is found here.
