Description: This shrubland alliance of cismontane southern California and Baja California, Mexico, typically occurs on steep slopes, from sea level to 400 m of elevation. The soils are shallow and coarse. Summers are very dry and warm, winters are mild. The bulk of precipitation occurs from November to April and falls as rain. Yearly rainfall totals average between 20 and 30 cm. This shrubland alliance contains Malosma laurina and/or Rhus integrifolia as important or dominant shrubs in the canopy. Other shrubs present may include Salvia mellifera, Salvia leucophylla, Schinus terebinthifolius, Schinus molle, Diplacus aurantiacus, Encelia californica, Artemisia californica, Juglans californica, Prunus ilicifolia, Sambucus mexicana, Toxicodendron diversilobum, Heteromeles arbutifolia, and Keckiella antirrhinoides. Emergent individuals of Juglans californica may be present.
