Name: Picea sitchensis - Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa / Orthilia secunda Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association is a common type found on low-elevation floodplains, outwash plains and recently deglaciated moraines of southeastern and south-central Alaska. It represents the most frequently disturbed portion of the riparian zone on well-drained undifferentiated alluvium. Picea sitchensis and Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa (= Populus trichocarpa) dominate the overstory. Tree height ranges up to 20 m (65 feet) and spruce regeneration is common. Stands are usually 40-100 years old. A variety of shrubs, such as Oplopanax horridus (= Echinopanax horridus) and Salix spp., occur. Common forbs include Pyrola spp., Lupinus nootkatensis, and Rubus pedatus.
